Hooper Bay Warriors runners-up at State 2A basketball

The Hooper Bay Warriors, the top seeded team in the 2A state division, took home the runner-up award at the State 2A Basketball Tournament last week. The Warriors played the Petersburg Vikings, congratulations to Petersburg who won 41-33.

There were 8 teams in the 2A Division, joining Hooper Bay and Petersburg were: Unalaska, Unalakleet, Metlakatla, Ninilchik, Cordova, and Wrangell.

In the opening round last Thursday, the Warriors defeated the Unalaska Raiders, 54-39 to advance to the semifinals. They beat the Metlakatla Chiefs in a close contest nailbiter, 48-44 to make it to the championship round.

Coming in third was Cordova. In fourth was the Unalakleet Wolfpack. Fifth place went to Metlakatla. Finishing in sixth was Wrangell.

In the girls’ division, there were also eight teams vying for the state crown: top seed Tikigaq, Haines, Glennallen, Unalakleet, Nenana, Hooper Bay, Metlakatla, and Susitna Valley.

The Hooper Bay Lady Warriors lost to Nenana in the opening round, 62-27. Their next game was with Su-Valley, the score was close 33-32 with Su-Valley winning the game.

The Metlakatla Miss Chiefs won the state 2A title, congratulations 51-42. Coming in second was Tikigaq, third was Nenana, fourth went to Glennallen, Unalakleet placed 5th, and Su-Valley took 6th.
