The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee hosted a kids dog mushing race on the Kuskokwim River on Sunday, April 7th, 2024.
“With winter weather hanging on into April and our purse races completed we have a chance to resume some great traditions. First up, the K300 Kids Championship!” said the K300 in an online post.
The race began at 1pm with a mass start on the river near Bethel. Racers were between 10 and 17 years old and will compete for a purse of $1,000. Mushers had a 5 dog limit for this event. From the start line teams headed up Straight Slough, turned right and mushed back around the island back towards Bethel.
Everyone enjoyed some hot dogs, a bonfire and a brief awards ceremony at the finish line.
Participating in the Kids Race were champion Spyridon Chaney, Daniel Williams, Conar Andrews, Ari Kaiser, Kohle Williams, Allie Chingliak, Sally Peters, Jordan Klejka, Isaac James, and Jason Alexie.
Spyridon Chaney finished the race in 25 minutes. Coming in second was Jason Alexie, Kohle Williams took third.
Up next will be the Rookie Race, open to any racer over 17 who has never participated in a sled dog race before. The race is tentatively set for Thursday, April 11th with a mass start at 6:30 PM pending trail conditions. If you’re interested in volunteering to help please contact Paul at 545-3300.
