AVCP applauds Governor’s appointment to Board of Fisheries

The Association of Village Council Presidents’ (AVCP’s) Executive Board and AVCP’s leadership are pleased with Governor Mike Dunleavy’s appointment of Curtis Chamberlain and reappointment of Marit Carlson-Van Dort to the Alaska Board of Fisheries.

The appointments come as Western Alaska continues to endure an unprecedented salmon crisis which is creating extraordinary hardship for the Native communities who depend on salmon for their physical, and cultural well-being.

Chamberlain of Bethel and Aniak, will join Carlson-Van Dort of Chignik Bay on the seven-person state panel. The Board of Fisheries is responsible for management of Alaska’s state fisheries.

AVCP’s Chief Executive Officer Vivian Korthuis applauds the appointments.

Korthuis says, “our voices will be heard on this powerful panel. We have been calling on the Governor and other state leaders to bring the voices of our region and Natives to the table. Curtis and Marit will bring their unique expertise and perspective to the critical decision-making process at the state level. This is a good day.”

Western Alaska communities have been struggling for the past several years due to the historic salmon crisis in our rivers. AVCP is demanding that Governor Dunleavy and lawmakers make finding a solution to the salmon crash a top priority.
