Rep. McCormick passes HJR17, urging action on Truth and Healing Commission

The Alaska House of Representatives has passed House Joint Resolution 17, a pivotal step in acknowledging the profound trauma inflicted by Indian boarding schools on indigenous communities across our state and nation.

House Joint Resolution 17 underscores the harrowing reality of Indian boarding schools in Alaska, whose legacy of abuse and intergenerational trauma continues to haunt our constituents. The existence of these schools, marked by infrastructure and graveyards that still stand as chilling reminders of past atrocities, demands urgent acknowledgment and reconciliation.

Throughout our state and country, the voices of survivors echo the pain and suffering endured during their time at Indian boarding schools. Yet, a lack of comprehensive documentation and acknowledgment has perpetuated a culture of silence and erasure, denying victims the justice and closure they deserve.

The passage of House Joint Resolution 17 represents a profound commitment to truth and healing. By urging the United States Congress to pass the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act, we take a crucial step toward confronting our collective past and paving the way for reconciliation and healing.

As representatives of the people of Alaska, we recognize the urgency of this resolution and the imperative to acknowledge the deep-seated trauma inflicted on indigenous communities. We stand in solidarity with survivors and their families, affirming our commitment to truth, justice, and healing.

Representative CJ McCormick (D-Bethel) stated: “I would like to thank Benjamin Jacuk and Emily Edenshaw with the Alaska Native Heritage Center for providing their testimony and speaking to their research. I would also like to thank Dr. Worl and Dr. Charles for testifying before the body and sharing what they had to endure. Passage of this resolution will aid many on their path of healing.”
