Scholastic statewide program improves student achievement, increases self-esteem, and awards $49,000 in annual scholarships!

The Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon are currently recruiting middle and high school teams for the upcoming season.

The Alaska Academic Decathlon state competition will be held at the University of Alaska Anchorage campus on February 21-24, 2024. High school teams from across Alaska are encouraged to participate. Middle schools can participate in the Pentathlon program and are also eligible for scholarships. Both programs can be offered as an after-school activity or as a class.

The Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon are nationwide competitions based on a yearly theme. Students compete in five or ten subjects both individually and as an integral part of a team. Aligned with National Standards and Alaska’s Education Challenge, the curriculum for both programs transfer across core content areas to increase student performance in Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and the Arts (other subjects include Music, Economics, Essay, Speech, and Interview for high school students). Each team is made up of students with varying abilities and GPAs.

The Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon are programs of SERRC, Alaska’s Educational Resource Center, a statewide non-profit providing educational services to school districts from Metlakatla to the Bering Sea.

Scholarships are provided by Alaska 529. Other Sponsors include the Alaska Community Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, GCI, ConocoPhillips Alaska, Alaska Commercial Company, RurAL CAP Foundation, Hecla Mining, Kensington Coeur Alaska, Alyeska Pipeline, Golden Heart Community Foundation, and the University of Alaska.

Schools interested in participating in this year’s program must register by December 1, 2023 at www.akacadeca.org.
