The Yupiit School District is proud to honor long time employee Debra Jackson of Akiak, Alaska. Debra has held several positions at the Akiak School, but her years as an elementary Yup’ik teacher have been of special value to the community and to students.

One of her biggest accomplishments has been bringing drumming, song and dance back to the community. The children now drum, sing and dance passionately and we have Debra to thank.

The beaver mittens were made by her former students now in high school as a way to recognize and thank Debbie for her years of dedication to the preservation of the Yup’ik culture. Mrs. Jackson will retire after 34 years of service to the Yupiit School District this May. Debra was the recipient of the 2023 AVCP Cultural Bearer Award.
