The Yukon Delta Conference 1A basketball tournament has its champions – the Scammon Bay Eagles and the St. Mary’s Lady Eagles.
The Western Conference 2A winners are also in – the Hooper Bay Warriors and the Chevak Lady Comets.
The Scammon Bay Eagles and the St. Mary’s Lady Eagles along with the runners-up – the Emmonak Huskies and the Scammon Bay Lady Eagles – will be representing the Lower Yukon School District at the State 1A Basketball Tournament on March 15-18, 2023. The Yukon Delta Conference is allotted 2 berths on the 1A state brackets.
The St. Mary’s Lady Eagles defeated the Mountain Village Lady Strivers in the opening round of tournament play. In the semifinals, they won against the Alakanuk Lady Braves and then defeated the Lady Eagles of Scammon Bay.
On the boys’ side, the Scammon Bay Eagles beat the Russian Mission Brown Bears in their first round match. In the semifinals they beat the Mountain Village Strivers to advance to the championship round. The Emmonak Huskies took second and the Scammon Bay Eagles are the champions.
The #1 seeded team in Alaska is the Scammon Bay Eagles. They will be playing Nunamiut Wolves (Anaktuvuk Pass) in the first round. The Emmonak Huskies will take on the #2 seed Cook Inlet Academy. The Toksook Bay Islanders will play the Aniak Halfbreeds also on the same bracket.
On the girls side, the St. Mary’s Lady Eagles will play against Cook Inlet Academy, and the Scammon Bay Lady Eagles will play #4 seed Buckland Sissuani. The Akiachak Lady Huskies will meet the #1 seed Lumen Christi in the first round. And the LKSD girls champions – the Akiuk Lady Grizzlies will play Shaktoolik.

The Western Coastal Conference has only two schools – Hooper Bay and Chevak – and only one berth to state. The Chevak Lady Comets will be playing Su-Valley in the first round on Thursday, March 16th. The #4 seed Hooper Bay Warriors will be playing the #5 seed team from Petersburg also on Thursday.
