Unalakleet runner wins State Division III XC title

Ourea Busk of Unalakleet is the girls high school Division III State Cross Country Champion. She finished the 5K course in 19:38.31 last Saturday at the Janecek Trails in Palmer, Alaska.

Ourea Busk, a sophomore from Unalakleet, won first place at the ASAA State Cross Country Division III Girls Championships held in Palmer, AK last Saturday, October 7th, 2023. She crossed the finish line with a time of 19:38.31 – nineteen seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Taylor Eddington of Tri-Valley, also a sophomore, won the silver medal, her time was 19:57.72. Haines’ Ari’el Godinez Long came in third place at 20:40.92. Pagan Lester of Newhalen finished in 4th, followed by Adelyn McCorison of Ninilchik for the top five.

Busk’s teammate Violet Jack placed 10th overall. Her time was 23:37.05.

Sleetmute runner Kiley Haden came in 16th at 24:31.14.

Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD) runner Abigail Mael of Chefornak placed 18th, her time was 24:59.22. Her teammate Destiny Panruk also ran, finishing in 49th place at 26:56.94.

Daisymae Tunutmoak of Scammon Bay also ran, finishing in 20th position. Alexandra Tunutmoak, her teammate, also raced, coming in 24th.

Hooper Bay’s Erica Aguchak finished at 26 mins, placing 34th. Her teammate Ernie Joe came in 39th.

Kipnuk also sent a runner to state, freshman Shawna Paul for LKSD. She covered the course in 26:04.11 finishing in 35th position.

Kalskag runner Alysha Levi finished in 26:41.91. Scottie Bukowski, a junior, finished in 48th position. Her time was 26:54.45.

Akiuk runner Teana Pavilla came in 57th, with a time of 27:18.86. Kongiganak’s Mariah Tinker placed 59th at 27:29.55.

Jesslyn Allain of Tuluksak also raced, placing 67th. Her time was 28:10.35.

A total of 86 runners participated in the girls Division III finals. Dillingham won the girls overall team award with 46 points. In second was Kake, 56. Third place went to Craig with 74 pts.

For the boys Division III finals, sophomore Boomchain Louks of Wrangell won at 17:28.04. In second place was his teammate senior Keegan Hansen. Cordova’s Floyd Widsoe placed third. Aulis Nelson of Craig took 4th followed by Wrangell’s Daniel Harrison who finished in 5th place.

Hooper Bay’s Latrell Lake cracked the top 10, finishing in 10th place with a time of 19:07.34. Ace Hill of Chevak took 15th crossing the finish line at 19:27.08. Payton Nanuk, also of Hooper Bay came in at 20:05.18, placing 26th.

Kwethluk runner Abraham Fisher took 35th, his time was 20:28.67. Klayton Maxie, also of Kwethluk, finished in 68th place at 22:59.15.

Four YK delta runner came in a pack, finishing 42nd through 45th place: senior Jarett Brown of Kongiganak at 20:54.56, Liam Pingayak 20:57.26, Kipnuk runner senior Andrew Paul 20:57.44, and Tuntutuliak racer senior Jordan Carl 21:08.

Alex Snyder of Akiachak placed 49th overall with a time of 21:17.18 followed by Dominic Tunutmoak, his time was 21:23.12.

Sleetmute’s Neal Sandford came in 52nd place at 21:33.99. Akiak’s Carson Phillip finished in 60th place, his time was 22:12.95.

There was a total of 80 runners in the boys Division III race. Wrangell won the team trophy with 28 points. In second was Cordova, 72. Third place went to Petersburg with 75 points.

Fog covered the racegrounds that morning, the temperature was cold in the low 40s but that did not stop fans from coming out to cheer. ASAA Director Billy Strickland, formerly of Bethel, was also at the races greeting the teams.
