Persson signed on to play for Umpqua RiverHawks

Rachelle Persson of Kalskag will play volleyball for the Umpqua College Riverhawks. Persson is a MEHS graduate and a 2016 state volleyball champion. She was named the "Best Defensive Specialist" at the State tournament.

The RiverHawk Volleyball team has signed Rachelle Persson of Kalskag, Alaska, to continue her volleyball career as a member of the RiverHawks. Persson played at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, where she was a member of the 2016 Alaska State Champions.

Persson was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2016 State Championships, as well as being named the best Defensive Specialist at the tournament. Her team also won the Region V Championship all four years of her high school career. In addition to being an outstanding athlete, Persson spent all four years of her high school career on the Honor Roll and is a member of the National Honor Society.

UCC Volleyball Coach Lacy Pinard had this to say about the signing of Persson. “Rachelle is an outstanding person and player. We are excited to see how her game transitions to the college level, as well as all of the attributes that she will bring to our team.”

Persson is joining her high school teammate, Zhane White as new RiverHawks for the 2017 season. The RiverHawks are coming off of a 28-23 season and an appearance at the NWAC Championships Tournament.

Umpqua’s Department of Athletics is composed of nine varsity sports teams including four men’s teams (basketball, cross country, wrestling and obstacle course racing), and five women’s teams (basketball, cross country, volleyball, wrestling and obstacle course racing). Umpqua is a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference in all sports except men’s and women’s wrestling and obstacle course racing. For men’s wrestling UCC belongs to the National Junior College Athletic Association and for women’s wrestling, the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association.
