Larson wins Kwethluk 2-day Sprint Dog Race

Gregory Larson of Napaskiak posted the fastest times on both days of the Kwethluk Sprint Dog Race this past weekend to win the top prize as the fastest musher in the race. His total time was 2:48:26 for the 2 days of racing. For his win he took home $3060 in prize money.

Coming in second place was Mike Williams Jr. of Akiak driving a young team. His total time was 2:56:55. Rounding out the top three was Raymond Alexie, age 17, of Kwethluk who finished with a total time of 3:08:07.

The races started at 1pm for the two days with mushers taking off in 2 minute intervals. Only 31 minutes separated the first musher from the last on Day 1 for the finishes.

On Day 2 racers began in reverse order of finishing on Day 1. there was an exciting close finish between Schouviller Wassillie of Napaskiak and Lewis Pavila of Kwethluk. Pavila finished 4 seconds before Wassillie. All teams finished within 34 minutes of each other on Day 2.

The total purse was $20K with an extra $10K for Kwethluk mushers. Taking the Red Lantern Award was Anthony Olick of Kwethluk.
