KuC to celebrate 50 years of postsecondary education

by Cindy Andrecheck

In July 1972, the University of Alaska established its first rural community college in Bethel, AK, the culmination of much hard work by a group of dedicated Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK) Delta residents and higher education advocates who envisioned a local campus where residents of the area could pursue their postsecondary education.

On Tuesday, May 13, 1975, Kuskokwim Community College celebrated its first graduation, awarding 2 Associate of Arts Degrees, 18 Certificates, and 37 GEDs. Fast forward 50 years and Kuskokwim Campus (KuC) will celebrate its Golden Anniversary graduation on May 7, 2024. Over those 50 years, KuC has seen approximately 3600 students cross its stage to receive GEDs, certificates, and degrees.

We are celebrating this wonderful accomplishment. On April 7 at 4pm in the Cultural Center, Thom Foote will host Ask an Alaskan, a game show highlighting KuC trivia. There will be an open house at the main campus on April 16 from 6-8pm showcasing KuC students, pictures, and memories. Kuc is planning an alumni dinner on April 29. Watch our website and social media for details and ways to make a reservation when plans are finalized. The grande finale, of course, will be the 50th graduation itself on May 7, 1:30pm at the Cultural Center.

Please join us and help Kuskokwim Campus commemorate 50 years of helping students achieve their educational milestones.
