Bethel Fire Department Calls for week ending September

• The department is recruiting one Fire Lieutenant (PS4A, Base Pay is $67,336/yr + DOE).

• The department is recruiting four Firefighter/EMT’s (PS2A, Base Pay is $52,373/yr + DOE).

• The department is recruiting four Temporary Firefighters (non-benefitted, up to 6 months, 40 hours/week, not eligible for overtime, $25/hour).

• Due to low staffing and coverage concerns, firefighters will be working a 48-on/48-off shift schedule until further notice. This will ensure that employees receive much-needed days off.

• The department is advertising for these positions nationally through multiple job advertisement services, Fire and EMS magazines, firefighter recruitment organizations, and various fire academies throughout Alaska and the lower 48 states. Department leadership will attend career fairs around the state to recruit personnel.

• The department is continually recruiting volunteer members to serve as firefighters, ETT/EMT’s, and support personnel. Become a volunteer today!

• The department’s new Class-A Pumper Tender Apparatus (Fire Engine) from Pierce Manufacturing, Inc. was completed in August. Hughes Fire Equipment transported the pumper to Alaska Marine Lines in Seattle/Tacoma, WA, where it was heat-shrink wrapped prior to being placed onto the barge to Bethel. We are looking forward to receiving, stocking, and placing our new pumper into service.

• The department has started the process of developing a specification with Braun Northwest, Inc. for a new Advanced Life Support Type-1 Ambulance to replace Medic-4, the 1999 Ford ALS Type-1 ambulance. The department will utilize a cooperative bid purchasing contract to acquire and purchase this vehicle.

• We have received the parts for the Class-A Foam system for Engine-4. Staff determined that a 1” valve was required, upon finding the ¾” valve shipped was too small for the current foam system plumbing. This project was put on hold to allow for the receipt of Engine-5 this summer to allow this apparatus to be taken out of service for modifications.
