The World Eskimo Indian Olympics is known for showcasing the beautiful regalia of the native peoples of Alaska. This year’s Baby and Open Competitions has its winners. The regalia contest for the babies took place on the second day of WEIO with the judging taking place earlier in the day and the parade and awards later that evening.
In the Open contest Cingarkaq Peter of Fairbanks took first place in the Indian Hide competition. Her family is from Toksook Bay and Arctic Village. She wore a traditional hide dress decorated with beads and beaded moccasins.
In the Eskimo Cloth category three ladies with roots in the Yukon Kuskokwim delta region swept the podium. Kylee Smith of San Antonio, Texas won, her family is from Tununak and Fairbanks. Coming in second was Lauryn Panruk Hansen, her family is from Toksook Bay and Fairbanks. In third place was Catherine Moses, her family is from Hooper Bay and Fairbanks.
The Open regalia contest took place Friday. Congratulations to the winners!
