Region wrestlers compete at Lancer Smith Tourney

The Chevak Comets, the Scammon Bay Eagles, and the Bethel Wrestling Club sent girls varsity wrestlers and elementary wrestlers to the Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla. Bethel wrestlers competed in the K-8 tournament.

For the varsity girls, Angelina Chiklak of Chevak placed 6th in the 103 weight class. Her teammate Michelle Atcherian finished 5th wrestling in the 119 lb. bracket.

For the Scammon Bay Eagles Shyanne Kopanuk won a bronze medal in the 189 lb. division. Seeya Rivers placed 6th for the Eagles in the 235 lb. weight class.

Bethel’s Maya Iverson of the Bethel Wrestling Club placed second in the girls Grades 3-5, 55-62 lbs. weight division. She defeated Madison Kirkpatrick and Lanikai Ostermiller, both from the Pioneer Grappling Academy (PGA), and Zaige Thammavongsa of the Avalanche Wrestling Club. Her only loss came from Leah Marchione (PGA) in the championship round.

Iverson also placed 4th overall in the 4th-5th 65 lb. weight division which had both boys and girls competing.

Saige Wheeler of Bethel also placed second in her division, the 90 lb. weight class for girls grades 3-5. She defeated Audrey Campbell of Gambell to advance to the finals. Madison Cotrell of PGA won.

Bethel’s Teil McIntyre also competed and won second place in the 4th-5th 70 lb. weight bracket. Coleman LeClair (All American Training Center) won.

For the 75 lb. bracket, Owen Carty of Bethel placed 5th.

Middle school wrestler Cole Iverson of Bethel placed 5th in the 84 lb. division. He defeated Byrson Andrew of New Stuyahok. Jackson Iverson, also of the Bethel Wrestling Club, placed 4th in the 105 lb. bracket.

Bethel’s Ethan Wheeler competed in the 118 lb. middle school division, placing 3rd. He defeated Emmanuel Mercado of Gruening Middle School and Levi Shivers of the Anchorage Youth Academy. Wheeler also competed in the 122 lb. bracket and also finished third.
