Protect the flower of the tundra from mine pollution

I’d like to express my thoughts about your (our) beloved paper “The Delta Discovery”. A well-edited and beauty of the tundra indeed. Every page is always a delight through stories, pictures, and discovery! A local paper to be proud of, I should say, filled with love, beauty, thoughtfulness, creativity, and attitudes of straightforward awakenings!

I also see a variety of individuals who put their heartfelt comments and columns in each edition.

But, this here is the bad part of it all, the dark side that is overlooked, rendering our paper as a cover, that all is well. But nonetheless, someone has to address and say it however it may be beheld.

Two words, “Donlin Gold”. Devastation on Native Lands is not golden on lands developed. No one seems to want to see, or hear, or speak about this dire subject. I feel this subject and/or a development of a mine, right at the heart of a region occupied by a mass of people called Yup’iks is an outright insult! Our voices seem to fade away, thus ignored to oblivion.

Now this part is important, ask yourselves who? Besides Natives or Yup’iks live in the Yukon Kuskokwim tributaries? I’m saying it…non natives and natives.

By the time this mine is even 2 to 3 years into it they will have built and accumulated 3 miles by 3 miles of chemical lake containing poison which will affect all residents at least 300 miles in each direction, including all animals that are a basis for human diets. Every soul and wildlife will be affected, all life will be shortened or outright cut off.

Let me add, Calista Corporation is all native-owned. This corporation is obviously questionable, if this region had been consulted before its alleged decision to partner with a mining company, all natives would have rejected it.

As for my fellow countrymen, directed to those with the most influence. Those working in high places such as hospitals, schools, jails, airports, restaurants, stores… the luxury you enjoy with high pay will also be affected. So where is your voice to stop and eliminate Donlin in its tracks, and rescue our country, let alone our very children?

People! It takes every last one of you to make a difference. Every individual has at least a few coins to buy a stamp and send and flood the Calista Corp’s President’s office with letters of concern, or even the Governor’s office. A few letters of concern – our voices are considered a minority and does not cut it. But all of you who breathe and occupy this flower of the tundra breathe together, live together, (likened to a two-edged sword), and soon we will all breathe toxic air and cease to subsistence, we express and fight not just for ourselves, but for our future generations, for all generations.

The lake of fire does not need to begin here, it is our Creator’s time and plan in the future in His time.

Get Donlin Gold off my (our) tundra. Let not you leave the job to someone else, but do the job as it was your own. I am sincerely and greatly concerned.
