Overdue hiker rescued with K9 help

The Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan received a report of an overdue 15 year old, from Ketchikan who had hiked up Settlers Cove trail towards the lake but had not returned before dark on 08/10/2021 at about 2130 hours. Family reported that the juvenile was not prepared to spend the night outside and had no supplies. Trooper Duran and K-9 Misty were in the area and were deployed to the scene. At about 2217 hours, Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad (KVRS) was activated and responded to the area. On 08/10/2021 at about 2350 hours, Trooper Duran and K-9 Misty located the juvenile approximately 3 miles up the Settler’s Cove trail. The juvenile reported having problems coming back down the trail due to darkness and getting disoriented. AST assisted the juvenile back down the mountain to safety. KVRS contacted AST on the trail and further assisted. No injuries were reported.
