Brent Sass disqualified from the 2024 Iditarod

The Iditarod Trail Committee Board convened a special meeting on February 22, 2024, where the Board unanimously voted, pursuant to Rule 53, to disqualify Brent Sass from competing in the 2024 Iditarod following accusations of sexual assaults.

Rule 53 — Personal Conduct states that “All Iditarod mushers will be held to a high standard of personal and professional conduct. Musher conduct that is recklessly injurious to the Iditarod, Iditarod competitors, sponsors or anyone associated with the race is strictly prohibited.”

Sass, a musher from Eureka and the 2022 Iditarod champion, posted that he will not be withdrawing from the 2024 Iditarod and stated that the “accusations against me are completely false and have been fabricated to try and ruin my reputation and end my career. I have full intentions to fight these defamatory allegations to the fullest of my abilities to clear my name and to continue running and racing sled dogs.”

The 2024 Iditarod is scheduled to begin on March 2nd, 2024 with the Ceremonial Start at 10:00am in downtown Anchorage and the Official Restart on March 3rd at 2:00pm in Willow, Alaska.
