The Bethel Warriors and the Lady Warriors raced to a fifth (boys) and sixth (girls) place finish in the Division II team standings at the 2023 ASAA Cross Country State Championships last Saturday in Palmer, AK, October 7th, 2023. Sophomore Rosemarie Dyment took the top finish for her team, crossing in 27th place with a time of 23:09.89. Her teammate Kyana Harpak, a junior, finished in 32nd at 23:32.30. Senior Jordan Klejka came in 40th position with a time of 24:11.21.
Mt. Edgecumbe’s Aries Boff came in 42nd at 24:15.80. Her teammate Bessie Williams finished at 24:38.15 in 49th position. Other Edgecumbe finishers included Sarah Nanouk-Jones and Sarah Bahnke, they placed 52 and 53.
Lady Warrior Hannah Leinberger crossed the finish line with a time of 25:23.60, she was in 54th place. Kayleigh Bell, a freshman, placed 62nd. Her teammate Riley Boney was 63rd, their times were 26:40.91 and 27:10.88.
Bethel’s freshman Ashlynn Lonewolf rounded out the Bethel girls, finishing in 65th place. Her time was 28:21.27.
Nome’s Lauren Kingstrom ran 21:32.09 for a 7th place finish overall. Her teammate and Region I Big West champion AwaLuk Wookie Nichols placed 9th with a time of 21:50.
A pair of Sitka runners took 1st and 2nd. Coming in first was Clare Mullin at 19:50.30. Marina Dill finished at 20:13.76. Seward’s Hailey Ingalls placed third. Grace Christian racers Sydney Mondeel and Tagan Rinner rounded out the top 5 placing 4th and 5th.
Seward girls won the top team award with 34 points. Grace Christian was second at 57. Sitka, also with 57 points, came in third. 4th place went to Homer and Monroe Catholic took 5th.
For the Bethel boys junior Ned Peters was the top finisher, his time was 17:31.66. He finished in 9th position. Freshman Jackson Iverson took 15th place, his time was 17:55.89. Their teammate Sheldon Smith, a junior, placed 28th overall at 18:45.69.
Orson Hoogendorn, a junior, placed 8th, his time was 17:29.34. Mt. Edgecumbe’s Jacob Friske also raced, placing 34th, his time was 18:58.86. Franz Fermoyle of MEHS finished in 50th place.
Bethel’s Madden Cockroft also finished in 40th positon. He crossed the finish line in 19:21.31. His teammate Alvino Vasquez placed 43rd at 19:32.46. He was followed by Paul Dyment, a Bethel senior. He finished at 19:45.97 in 48th place.
Ethan Wheeler of the Bethel Warriors also ran, placing 51st at 19:59.43.
Edgecumber runners Derek Wilson and Atigun Pensley also raced.
Winning the race was Robert Annett of Grace Christian. His time was 16:39.06. His teammates Colton Merriner and Simon Nelson came in 3rd and 4th. Winning the silver medal was Gregory Fallon of Kenai. Taking the fifth spot was Connor Hitchcock of Sitka.
The team awards were 1st Grace Christian 47, 2nd Sitka 66, 3rd Homer 73, 4th Mountain City Christian Academy 111, and 5th Bethel 118.
