The Sand Pit Race had a great turnout this past weekend – for both teams and fans. Elementary, junior high, and high school teams from Akiachak, Akiak, Akiuk, Akula, Alakanuk, Aniak, Ayaprun Elitnaurvik, Chefornak, Chevak, Gladys Jung Elementary, Hooper Bay, Kwethluk, Marshall, Mountain Village, Quinhagak, Russian Mission, Scammon Bay, Toksook Bay, Tuluksak, and Tununak came to the event. 246 runners total participated althogether.
Fans converged at the beloved sand pit on BIA Road, the venue for many cross country races hosted by the Bethel Regional High School (BRHS) Warriors. Volunteers at the starting line and race spotters kept the runners safe. Trail groomers made sure to keep the track nice and smooth for each race. Fans lined the race trail and finishing chute to cheer on the runners.
The air was frosty and cars were in need of defrosting that morning.
The first event was the elementary-junior high girls race. Maya Iverson of Gladys Jung won the 4th-6th grade division. Her time was 12:50. Winning the girls 7th-8th grade race was Claire Dyment of BRHS. The next race was for the 4th-8th grade boys. Carson Charlie of Scammon Bay won in the boys 4th-6th division. His time was 11:56. Coming in first for the 7th – 8th grade boys was Jackson Iverson, his time was a 10:27.
The BRHS students served coffee and hot chocolate for racers and fans at the Pit as a fundraiser for their school. Kids played in the sand while waiting for their runners to finish, the day was nice and sunny.
The high school girls raced next – Payton Boney of the Bethel Lady Warriors won the top spot, her time was 26:26. Ned Peters of the Bethel Warriors won the varsity boys race with a time of 20:47. An awards ceremony took place after the last race. Senior Adilyn Jung was honored for her participation in cross country. Teams packed up and headed to the airport to await their flights home. Next is the Region I Big West Conference XC meet to be held in Nome.
