Bethel Fire Department Calls for week ending May

• The department received the 2021 State of Alaska Homeland Security SHSP grant award for the purchase of new portable and mobile radios to replace obsolete equipment. This equipment will be purchased from ProComm Alaska through Sourcewell Contract #36273.

• The department and City Grant Manager prepared an application for the 2022 State of Alaska Homeland Security SHSP Grant for the purchase of Class A and Class B firefighting foam. Additionally, the department is planning to obtain DHS funding for security fencing, cameras, and lighting for the planned fire training tower which will be located adjacent to the fire station.

• The department is recruiting for two Firefighter/EMT (PS2A, $52,373/yr + DOE) positions.

• The department is recruiting for one Fire Lieutenant (PS4A, $67,336/yr + DOE).

• The department is recruiting for one Temporary Administrative Assistant ($25/hour, up to 40 hours/week, up to six months duration) position.

• The department is recruiting for one Temporary Summer Firefighter Intern ($15/hour, up to 40 hours/week, up to six months duration) position.

• We have received the parts for the Class-A Foam system for Engine-4. Staff determined that a 1” valve was required, upon finding the ¾” valve shipped was too small for the current foam system plumbing. This project was put on hold to allow for the receipt of Engine-5 in May/June 2023 to allow this apparatus to be taken out of service for modifications.

• A technician from Air Exchange, LLC repaired and replaced various components of the fire station’s PlymoVent vehicle exhaust removal system.

• UL, Inc. will arrive in Bethel in May to perform pump testing for the department’s apparatus fire pumps and aerial device.
