Hooper Bay boys and girls and Chevak girls advance to State 2A semifinals

The 2A State Basketball is in full swing and three YK delta region teams have won their first games and are advancing to the semifinals – both Hooper Bay teams and the Chevak Lady Comets.

The Scammon Bay Eagle boys were defeated by the Tikigaq Point Hope Harpooners 72-34. Jerry Kaganak scored 14 for the Eagles and Joelian Lane made 31 points for the Harpooners. Quarter scores were: 1st 21 Tikigaq, 6 Scammon Bay, 2nd 33-21, 3rd 53-28. The Eagles had a good second quarter outscoring the Harpooners 15-12. The Eagles are coached by Harley Sundown and Herschel Sundown. Tikigaq is coached by Teddy Frankson.

Scammon Bay will play Davis-Romoth on the consolation bracket.

The Chevak Lady Comets defeated the Tok Wolverines 59-34 at the Wasilla High School. The Comets outscored the Wolverines in all four quarters. High scorers for Chevak were Ashley Ulroan who had 19. Her teammate Hannah Pingayak also scored in the double digits with 10. For the Wolverines Heaven Albert had 12 and Desirae Constantine scored 11. Chevak is coached by Priscilla Matchian. The Lady Comets will advance to play the Su-Valley Lady Rams in the semifinals.

The Unalakleet Lady Wolfpack played the Su-Valley Rams and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied 8-8. At half time the Rams had a 3 point lead, 14-11. In the third period the Lady Wolfpack only scored 3 points to the Ram’s 13. The final score was 36-24. Lena Ivanoff and Victoria Fisher both scored 7 for Unalakleet. Su-Valley’s Alana Barron had 14 and India Roderick scored 10. The Lady Wolfpack is coached by Myra Harris. They will be playing Tok on the consolation bracket.

The Unalakleet Wolfpack boys also lost their first game to the Tok Wolverines, 85-59. First quarter score was 17 Wolverines, 13 Wolfpack. Four Tok players finished in the double digits: Revyn Almquist-Corgill had 29, Jeffrey Adams scored 21, Teddy Northway had 16, and Brendan Gunter had 11. For Unalakleet Ellsworth Haugen scored 27 and Cody Ivanoff made 21. Unalakleet Wolfpack boys are coached by Jack Thurman. The Tok Wolverines have a lady coach, Kristie Charlie.

Unalakleet boys will be playing the Su-Valley Rams in the consolation bracket.

The fourth seed Hooper Bay Lady Warriors defeated the top-seeded Tikigaq Lady Harpooners by one point in an exciting come-from-behind win. At the end of the first quarter the score was Tikigaq 12, Hooper Bay 7. By the end of the first half, the Lady Warriors had pulled ahead by three points, 23-20. End of third the score was tied at 34. In the final quarter, the Lady Warriors outscored their opponents 9 to 8 to win the game. For Hooper Bay Mary Long scored 17 and Zoey Lake scored 14. For Tikigaq Jadyn Lane and Makayla Lane both had 10. Tikigaq coach is Ramona Rock. The Hooper Bay coach is Brandi Hale.

The Hooper Bay Lady Warriors will be playing the Glennallen Panthers in the semifinals.

The Hooper Bay Warrior boys also had a great game against the Su-Valley Rams. The Warriors defeated the Rams 70-47 in an action packed game. First quarter the Warriors were up 28-7. At halftime the score was 44 Hooper Bay – 12 Su-Valley. Nile Smith finished with 26 points, Evin Matchian scored 16, and Latrell Lake scored 10. For the Rams Bryson Jolley had 15, Tristan Shelby had 11, and Charles Goodman scored 12. The Warriors are coached by Albert Green.

The Hooper Bay Warrior boys will be playing Tok in the semifinals.

In girls 1A action, the Alakanuk Braves fell to the Klawock Chieftains, 56-19. The top scorers were Jacelyn Chikigak who scored 9 for the Lady Braves and Kenai Holien who scored 26 for the Lady Chieftains. The Lady Braves are coached by Gregory Ayunerak Sr.

The Alakanuk girls will be playing Buckland on the consolation bracket.

On the boys 1A bracket, the Pilot Station Kings lost to Tanalian (Port Alsworth) 89-56. The Tanalian Lynx had three players finish with double digit scores: Daniel Wardell with 41, Isaac Fowler with 19, and Caleb Alsworth who had 17. For the Kings, Patrick Polty finished with 16 and Patrick Fitka with 15. Pilot Station is coached by Robert Myers.

The Kings will be playing Buckland on the consolation bracket.

These games were played at four different venues and we regret that we were not able to cover all due to time constraints, commuting between gyms, and game times. Thanks for your understanding.
