Board of Education taking public comments on high school sports athletes

The Alaska Board of Education is now taking public comments on a proposal to prohibit biological males who identify as females from competing against high school girl athletes. The 30-day public comment ends on July 21st, 2023.

Notice of Proposed Changes on Interscholastic Activities in the Regulations of Department of Education And Early Development. (1) 4 AAC 06.115(b)(5) is proposed to be changed as follows: to require nonprofit associations that administer and promote interscholastic activities in Alaska to ensure fairness, safety, and equal opportunity for female students in high school athletics by limiting participation in separate high school athletics teams for female students in competitive or contact sports to females who were assigned female at birth.

You may comment on the proposed regulation changes, including the potential costs to private persons of complying with the proposed changes, by submitting written comments to the Commissioner’s Office, Department of Education and Early Development, Attn: Regulations Review, 333 Willoughby Ave., 9th Floor, State Office Building, P.O. Box 110500, Juneau, Alaska 99811-0500. Additionally, the Department of Education and Early Development will accept comments by facsimile at 907-465-2806 and by electronic mail at [email protected]. Comments may also be submitted through the Alaska Online Public Notice System by accessing this notice on the system and using the comment link. The comments must be received not later than 4:30 p.m. on July 21, 2023.
