A K9 team helped detain a man after he ran away from officers on the Sterling Highway. The Soldotna AST K-9 Team conducted a traffic stop on 6-4-2022 at 2022 hours on a 2016 silver Chevrolet Cruz for traveling at a high rate of speed and reckless driving near mile 108 of the Sterling Highway. The vehicle was occupied by two males and the driver was identified as Michael Aaron Powell. Powell has a $5,000 warrant for his arrest for the original charge of robbery and assault. Powell failed to yield to the emergency vehicle and accelerated to excessive speeds. The passenger asked Powell to let him out or to drop him off somewhere. Powell threatened bodily harm with a weapon to the passenger. The vehicle came to a stop near Mile 110 of the Sterling Highway. A Felony Traffic Stop was conducted. Powell was non-compliant during the traffic stop. During the removal of the passenger from the vehicle the driver sped off at a high rate of speed almost striking the passenger as well as AST. The vehicle was located abandoned near the area with a tarp and boards covering it. The Anchor Point K-9 Team arrived shortly after the suspect vehicle was located. K-9 Trooper Scout and her Partner K-9 Lavi tracked the suspect to a 32-foot Crown Imperial RV. Powell was arrested without further incident and he was transported to Wildwood Pretrial and remanded on charges of Eluding 1st, A3x2, A2, Coercion, Reckless Driving & Evidence Tampering, after he received medical clearance form CPH.
