The Mekoryuk Herders are celebrating their high school basketball team, the first they have had since 2002. It has been two decades since a player donned a Herder uniform. This past weekend, that ended when the Nuniwarmiut School sent a team across Etolin Strait to Nelson Island to play in the tournament hosted by the Toksook Bay Islanders. The team is co-ed with seven players – both boys and girls. The Nuniwarmiut Herders won two out of the three games that they played. When they went home to their island, they were welcomed back by the proud community with signs and banners. The Mekoryuk Lady Herders went to the state championships in 1998, 1999, and 2001. Their top finish was in 1998 when they were the top number 4 team in the state.
