In all things, give thanks

by Peter Twitchell

The good Lord tells us in the Holy Bible, in all things give thanks. Many times I see redheaded sparrows, little birds, happily flying near me and they have their little movements. Sometimes I watch them and it reminds me of someone dancing in the wind. They landed not too far from me and looked at me as if they know me and I thanked them for their greeting.

When I was a boy growing up, I heard dozens of times our Elders telling stories and sharing with each other what they remember when they were younger. They always said “always be thankful” in my native language, QUYARRLAINARLUTA. You know – give thanks.

This teaching always reminds me that there is nothing else that matters most than being thankful for what we have when we have it and what we’re given in this life. I was given parents who loved me. I was given relatives, many friends, many many friends, and still more friends, and for this, I am grateful and thankful.

I never worked for pensions, although I had an opportunity to retire, never needing anything in my life. Instead I live from day-to-day being thankful for each day and for what I have. I am still grateful for my family, my friends, love and joy, peace in my heart and always thankful each night and each morning for a new day.

I never forget to credit the Elders for what they left me – a part of their wisdom, and joy, peace, and happiness, and good health. Living life to its fullest, it’s up to each one of us to accomplish in our brief lifetime.

Thank you still to my Elders today at 73. An older person will talk to me and remind me to be grateful and thankful for the life we are given. Quyanaqvaa. Thank you very much.
