Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation’s Shawn Vainio, MD, FAAFP, was recently elected by his peers to serve as the President of the Alaska Academy of Family Physicians. (AKAFP). He is originally from Girdwood, Alaska.
Dr. Vainio completed his medical school training at the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo, NY. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. Most of his professional career he has worked in remote locations in Alaska. Currently he works for the Yukon Kuskokwin Health Corporation providing ER, Obstetrics and Inpatient services in the Native Alaskan hub village of Bethel.
He is excited to serve the AKAFP. Dr. Vainio will balance these efforts while working in Bethel; being a husband to his amazing wife Annjannette (while being the number one fan of her artwork and career); being a father to his ten year old adventure seeking daughter Anja; coordinating the Second Annual Alaskan Improving Diagnostic Accuracy in Medicine Virtual Conference (Sept. 7-8); and hopefully returning to the Indian Transhimalaya in 2022 for medical volunteer work with the Ancient Tribes of India and Tibetan refugees that he has been involved with for near 20 years (Covid willing).
The AKAFP is a constituent chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AKAFP serves 419 members including 323 active family physician members.
