Alexie wins Bethel Sprint Mushers Club sled dog race

The Bethel Sprint Mushers Club hosted a sled race last Saturday and the winner is Raymond Alexie of Kwethluk. Alexie won the event, finishing with a time of 2 hours 59 minutes. There were eighteen mushers total who raced.

Coming in second was Darren George, his time was 3:06. Finishing in third position was Jason Pavilla, his time was 3:07.

The race began at 11am with a mass start on the Kuskokwim River in front of the Small Boat Harbor. The race had an 8-dog limit and a $30,000 purse that was paid to the top 15 finishers.

Mushers raced upriver, up Straight Slough, then towards the mouth of the Gweek River. The trail turned right around the back side of the island near the mouth of the Gweek, then continued on the Kuskokwim River towards Akiachak.

Racers used the portage trail to the Kuskokuak Slough and then turned downriver to eventually meet up with the same trail back to the finish in Bethel.

Raymond Alexie is continuing his winning streak starting from last season and through this season. Congrats to all mushers and dog teams.
