Teams from the Yukon Kuskokwim delta region are headed to the state Mixed 6 and 2A volleyball championship finals this week. For Mixed 6 we have the Kalskag Grizzlies (who won the Sportsmanship Award in 2020), the Emmonak Huskies, and the Nelson Islanders of Toksook Bay on the bracket. Joining them are Shishmaref, Gustavus, Fort Yukon, Hoonah, Shaktoolik, Buckland, Nuiqsut, Glacier View, and last year’s runner up Tanalian (Port Alsworth).
For the 2A championship we have the Chevak Comets. Also on the 2A bracket are Su-Valley, New Stuyahok, Klawock, Cordova, Dillingham, Wrangell, and Tri-Valley.
Opening round M6 games will be Emmonak vs. Hoonah, and Toksook Bay vs. Shaktoolik. Kalskag will play the winner of Tanalian vs. Fort Yukon. Chevak will play Tri-Valley.
The games are sponsored by the Alaska School Activities Association and Dimond High School and will take place December 2 – 4, 2021. COVID-19 protocols for indoor state events will be followed.
