Williams Jr. wins Campout Race

The 2022 Campout Race has a new champion – Mike Williams Jr. of Akiak took first place on March 27th, 2022. Congratulations!

“A field of 10 teams competed in the Campout Race, enjoying a beautiful later winter weekend on the trail under sunny skies. Teams traveled 42 miles yesterday to the campsite on the Gweek River. The trip upriver is not a race with teams leaving on their own schedule and taking a leisurely pace. Dogs, mushers and handlers enjoyed a beautiful afternoon and evening on the Gweek before beginning the race back to Bethel with mass start at 10am today,” wrote the K300 Committee race organizers. “Mike Williams Jr. pulled away from the pack early and held on to his lead to the finish, fending off a late push from Jason Pavila.”

Williams Jr. finished the race with a time of 3 hours 14 minutes. Pavila was close behind, finishing two minutes after Williams, his time was 3 hours 16 minutes. In third was Isaac Underwood of Aniak. He completed the race in 3 hours, 21 mins.

John Snyder of Akiachak took home the Red Lantern Award, he finished in 4 hours, 17 mins.

The Campout Race is the final purse race of the K300 Race Committee 2021-22 Season.

“Thanks to all mushers, volunteers and fans for riding along with us for another great winter of racing. Weather permitting, we aim to host some short fun runs for kids and rookies in the next couple of weeks and will announce those plans soon,” wrote the K300.
