Wassillie wins February 50 Doubles sled dog race

Schouviller Wassillie Jr. and his racing double Blake Wassillie won the February 50 Doubles sled dog race this past Saturday, March 1st in Bethel. They finished the 50 mile course in 2:32 to win $3700.

Nine teams signed up for the event where each team must have two mushers and a 10-dog limit. Teams can choose to pull a second sled or have both racers on one sled.

“We’re excited about the opportunity this event presents to involve some less experienced mushers,” wrote the Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee who sponsors this event. “One racer for each team must be at least 16 years old and should be an experienced musher. The second racer must be at least 10 years old but it is not required that they be a child.”

The race began with a mass start at 11am on the Kuskowkim River in front of Bethel by the Small Boat Harbor. Racers headed upriver to Joe Pete’s Trail and traveling on it towards Napaskiak Slough, then teams traveled overland until they reached the turnaround point near Kwethluk before heading back to Bethel on the same trail.

Coming in second were Raymond Alexie and Thaddeus Chaney of Kwethluk. In third were Michael Williams Jr. and Daniel Williams of Akiak.

The February 50 Doubles is part of the Delta Championship Series. Results for the race are above. Up next is the Campout Race.
