Warriors open season with tournament in Kodiak

The Bethel Warriors boys and girls high school basketball teams competed in the 54th Annual Joe Floyd Basketball Tournament in Kodiak on Dec. 27-29, 2021. The host team – the Kodiak Bears welcomed visiting teams from Soldotna, Nikiski, North Pole, and Bethel for the three-day event.

The Lady Warriors opened the tournament with a loss to the eventual tournament champions, the North Pole Patriots 57-36. The Lady Warriors won their next two games beating the host team the Kodiak Lady Bears 45-26 and the Nikiski Bulldogs, 50-25.

The Lady Warriors played their final game of the tournament losing to the Soldotna Stars, the eventual tournament runner-up 42-31.

The Warrior boys lost their first two games of the tournament falling to the Nikiski Bulldogs 37-52 and the Soldotna Stars 46-75. The Bethel Warriors came back to win their third game against the North Pole Patriots 53-44. The Kodiak Bears won the boys tournament overall. The Warriors took fourth place.

Lady Warriors Ava Lieb and Bryn Garrison were named to the All Tournament team along with Peter Crow for the boys. Ava Lieb won the Hoop Shoot free throw contest.

“It was great to see our students put on the Warrior uniforms for the first time since March 2020,” said Lady Warrior Head Coach Regina Lieb.

The Warrior boys hosted games with the Tanana Wolves this past weekend. The Lady Moose of Palmer who were also invited for the weekend games did not make it to Bethel.
