VFW sponsors Invitational Tournament in Bethel Scammon Bay sweeps victories

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10041 in Bethel, Alaska hosted their annual invitational basketball tournament this past weekend. Playing in the games were girls teams from Bristol Bay, Aniak, Scammon Bay, Kalskag, Akiachak, and Chevak. Boys teams participating were Bristol Bay, Scammon Bay, Kalskag, and Chevak. These teams joined the host team, the Bethel Warriors JV boys and girls teams. The Bethel varsity boys and girls were playing in Seward, home of the SeaHawks and the Alaska SeaLife Center.

The teams from Toksook Bay and Dillingham weren’t able to make it.

Winning the tournament were the Scammon Bay Lady Eagles and the Eagles boys team. The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Angels of Bristol Bay 33-30. Both teams had two players foul out, Scammon had two subs on the bench and Bristol Bay had three. High scorers were Lady Eagle Billie Rivers with 10 and Lady Angel Kaylee Hill with 11.

For the boys the Scammon Bay Eagles defeated the Aniak Halfbreeds 77-56. Top scorers for the game were Eagle Adam Rivers with 28 and Halfbreed Ryan Steeves with 19. Aniak had seven players, two fouled out. The Eagles had eight with no foul outs.

In the battle for third place, the Akiachak Lady Huskies defeated the Bethel Lady Warriors JV team, 53-39. Top scorer for the Lady Huskies was Keitha Phillip with 20. For the Lady Warriors Iceis Harpak scored 12.

On the boys bracket, the Chevak Comets won over the Bethel Warriors JV team 42-39. High scorer for the Comets was Avron Atchak with 15 and for the Warriors Aaron Mute scored 14.

“That was the loudest our gym got tonight in about two years, that was awesome,” said Darren Lieb, the Athletic Director for Bethel Regional High School.

The Aniak Halfbreeds and the Kalskag Grizzly Bears drove down on the Kuskokwim Ice Road for the games, traveling over 10 hours. They departed on Saturday after their games to make it home as early as possible.

The Bristol Bay Angels also had their game moved up so that they could catch the evening jet back to Anchorage and beyond.
