September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and the ONC Qasgiq Department held a “Tua-i Walk”. In the Yup’ik/Cup’ik language “Tua-i” means to stop or no more. The community of Bethel came together to say “Tua-i to Suicide” We had sign and akutaq making a couple days before the Walk happened. We also had the Holistic Life Foundation from Baltimore talk to the youth about “Mindfulness” and also taught them breathing techniques.

We would like to thank the Community of Bethel for showing up and speaking up together against suicide! We would also like to thank the following for their donations: KYUK; Corinas Caselot; First Nation Bank of Alaska; AC; AVCP; TWC; TAAV; Beverly Hoffman; Susan Taylor; Hazel Keezer; and anyone else who supported to make this “Tua-i Walk” happen.

If you or someone you know is in a crisis and at risk for suicide, please call the National Suicide Lifeline – 1-800-273-8255 or text “Home” to 741741.
