Although not written about Tim Oosterman, these words of old describe him well. Tim was his own man, fearless and adventurous. He had a full life in his 65 years, from boyhood in the Midwest and summers spent on his grandfather’s farm in New England to his 35 years in Bethel, Alaska.
Tim left his mark wherever he went in an unassuming manner. Across the country there are flags flying on obscure military graves, stone walls repaired, trees growing to beautify solitary places, moose racks adorning buildings, children who have had stories read to them, and people whose lives have been blessed by a kind word or gesture, all because of Tim. Despite being intensely private, his door was open to fellow travelers on the road of life and there was always food and a place to stay at his house.
Tim’s work as a City of Bethel employee gave him a way to support his family and use his wide skills and sharp mind. He was especially proud of the many years he served as a small water systems operator, for which he received recognition. He was an avid reader, experienced outdoorsman, faithful son & brother, and loving father & grandfather. Tim kept that sharp mind and strong will to his final day, in spite of cancer weakening his body. He died at home in his sleep, answering the call of his Good Shepherd.
He is survived by his children Dexter Kairaiuak, Thomas J. Oosterman, Amanda M. Oosterman – all of Bethel, grandchildren Alyssa and Maison, and former wife Cathy Kairaiuak. Also surviving Timothy are his mother Marilyn F. Oosterman, brother William F. Oosterman – both of Oxford, PA, and sister Mary Elizabeth Armistead (Daniel), formerly of Bethel and presently of Las Cruces, NM, and her children Isaac, Tricia, Anna Marie, and Robert. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Oosterman, and younger brother David L. Oosterman. Tim will be greatly missed by his extended circle of friends and family.
There was a memorial service for Tim on Saturday, August 25, at 2:00 PM at the Bethel Moravian Church with interment and meal following.
