The extended period of warm, wet weather in late December and the cold and wind that followed have created numerous challenges for mushers and race organizers, leading the K300 Race Committee to postpone the 2022 Bogus Creek 150. The race was originally scheduled to start on Saturday, January 15th, two weeks before the Kuskokwim 300. The Committee has not established a new date for the Bogus Creek 150 but has determined that it will not take place until sometime after K300 Race Weekend (Jan 28-30).
Numerous mushers have reported that weather forced them to stop training for two weeks or more. Even since it turned colder late last week, icy and windy conditions have continued to limit training. This raised concerns among mushers and the Race Committee about the readiness of teams for a 150 mile race on what may still be a tough trail just 10 days from now.
The work of trail markers has been delayed by the thaw and current poor conditions as well. With no guarantee that they’d be able to get a trail in to the Bogus Creek Checkpoint this coming weekend, the Committee can’t be sure we’d have a safe, marked trail in time for the race.
There is no change to the Kuskokwim 300 schedule, slated to start at 6:30 PM on Friday, January 28th. The Akiak Dash is still scheduled for Saturday, January 29th.
The Race Committee decided to take a little time to consider logistics changes, the availability of volunteers and other factors before setting a new date for the Bogus Creek 150. They may reach a decision as soon as next week at which time we’ll make another announcement.
