Ten perish in aircraft accident

Alaska State Troopers were contacted by Air Force Alaska Rescue Coordination Center in reference to an overdue aircraft on Thursday February 6, 2025, at 4:00pm. It was reported that a Bering Air Caravan had gone missing while en route from Unalakleet to Nome, with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board. SAR crews worked to get to the last known coordinates.

February 7, 2025, 9:30am: Search efforts for the missing plane are ongoing. The U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska Army National Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and local search teams are actively looking for the aircraft. The U.S. Coast Guard is the lead agency overseeing the ongoing search efforts.

On Friday afternoon, February 7th, 2025 the wreckage of the crashed plane was located on an ice field 34 miles southeast of Nome, Alaska by a coast guard search helicopter.

On February 8, 2025, 2:30 pm, the Alaska State Troopers, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Alaska National Guard aircraft and personnel conducted recovery efforts at the site of the Bering Air plane crash. Two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, a Nome-based UH-60L Black Hawk, an HC -130J Combat King II and a team of pararescuemen worked to recover the victims. The bodies have been recovered and brought to Nome where they were positively identified by Alaska State Troopers. The bodies will now be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for autopsies. Next of kin has been notified.
