Simon and George tie for 1st in Bethel Sprint race

Jonathan Simon of Bethel tied for first place during last Saturday's Bethel Sprint Mushers Club dog race on the Kuskokwim River. The race trail went upriver to the Gweek, then back to Bethel.

Jonathan Simon of Bethel and John George of Akiachak tied for first place in last weekend’s Bethel Sprint Mushers Club race. The approximately 16-18 mile race trail started on the main river in front of the Small Boat Harbor, up Straight Slough then turning left and continuing on the left side of the main river. The trail continued up past the Gweek River and going around island before heading back to Bethel the same way.

It was a nice day for a race and folks came out to cheer for their favorite mushers. Coming in second was Maurice Andrews of Bethel. In third was Ryan Jackson of Akiak.

Kwethluk musher Lewis Pavilla scratched from the race due to sled problems early on the trail.

The second heat of the race scheduled for Sunday, February 18th, 2018 was cancelled. The February 50 race sponsored by the Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee is scheduled for February 24th at 11:00 am.
