Alaska Wildlife Troopers received report on 8/5/2022 that Connor Beckman, of Nevada, had not returned home from a hike up Mount Roberts and Sheep Mountain on the afternoon on 8/4. Beckman was not prepared to overnight in the field and had no food or water. Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEADOGS were mobilized along with concerned family and friends who began searching the trail system. The US Coast Guard sent a helicopter from Sitka Station who flew the area but weather prevented effective aerial searching.
At about 1405 hours on 8/5/22 Beckman walked out to the trailhead where he was met by searchers. He had unexpectedly spent the night on Sheep Mountain after a weather system moved in while he was on the mountain and prevented him from finding the way down due to dense fog. The weather system also brought strong wind and rain so Beckman made a rock wind break and dug into the rocks for shelter for the night. In the morning he resumed looking for the trail back down, which he eventually did. He walked in the dense fog not knowing where the trail he found would lead. He eventually found his way to the trailhead.
Beckman reported no injuries. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers thank the hours or work by Juneau Mountain Rescue, South East Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, and the US Coast Guard for their efforts in the search.
