The Scammon Bay Lady Eagles’ march to the regional tournament – and a possible return to the Class 1A state tournament – moved a step closer to becoming a reality this past weekend as they pounded out a pair of impressive wins over St. Mary’s and Alakanuk.

The Lady Eagles, now 21-0, kicked off the weekend with an 82-39 victory over St. Mary’s. They finished the outing on Saturday with a 112-46 romp over Alakanuk.

The defending Class 1A champion, Scammon Bay had entered the week ranked No. 2 in the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches’ poll. The poll was issued on Feb. 15.

Scammon Bay was the only Y-K area team listed among the state’s best.

In the Class 3A ranks, the Barrow girls and boys were both ranked. The Lady Whalers were No. 1 in the girls’ poll, while the BHS boys were third.

The Kotzebue Lady Huskies debuted at No. 5 in the latest poll, replacing Bethel.
