Scammon Bay maintains hold on top spot

by Tommy Wells
The Scammon Bay Lady Eagles continue to be showered with respect by the state’s coaches. A lot of it.
For the second week in a row, the Lady Eagles were tabbed the state’s top-ranked team in the Class 1A poll by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches. The weekly poll ranks the top five squads in each of the state’s four classifications.
Scammon Bay, now 10-2 overall, edged out fellow Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta power Aniak in the rankings. Nikolaevsk, King Cove and Teller rounded out the top five teams in the girls’ Class 1A poll.
In the Class 3A rankings, the Barrow boys’ and girls’ teams both received notice. Both squads were ranked fifth in their respective divisions.
