Basketball fans: the Scammon Bay Eagles and Hooper Bay Warriors high school boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Point Hope last week to play in the 2021 Rex Rock Tip Off Basketball Tournament March 3-5.
Other teams participating in the tournament also included the Glennallen Panthers and the host team, the Tikigaq Harpooners.
COVID-19 precautions were followed including wearing of masks.
“Point Hope today,” wrote Scammon Bay head coach Harley Sundown on March 2nd. “Seems like it wouldn’t happen. For our seniors it means so much to travel in your last year. Thank you so much for those in our bod (board) who fought the mental battle for us to make this day a possibility. Even we have 2 good weeks of ball it’s a blessing. May your day be blessed.”
The teams enjoyed the round robin tournament, a skills competition, Eskimo Dancing, and all seniors were recognized during a senior night ceremony. The Scammon Bay team also enjoyed whale muktuk and a tour of the Point Hope community.
Scammon Bay boys played the Glennallen Panthers on Wednesday, final score was Scammon 47, Glennallen 56. On Thursday, Scammon Bay lost to Tikigaq, 78-47. And on Friday, Scammon Bay was also defeated by the Hooper Bay Warriors, 66-35.
Hooper Bay boys narrowly defeated the Glennallen Panthers on Thursday, 37-34. On Wednesday they lost to Tikigak, 65-30.
Hooper Bay girls beat Glennallen 32-28 on Thursday. The Scammon Bay girls team lost to Glennallen on Wednesday, 46-16. Other scores have not been posted.
Scammon Bay and Hooper Bay are both 2A schools. They will be looking to secure berths for the 2A State Basketball Tournament to be held the April 1-3, 2021 in Wasilla/Palmer. The tournament for 1A State will also be held April 1-3, and possibly March 31st, according to the Alaska Schools Activities Association.
