Janice Wiseman of Tuntutuliak is the recipient of the first annual Mary Ciuniq Pete Legacy Scholarship. A selection committee made the award decision. Wiseman will receive $1,000 for college expenses. The scholarship is housed at Bethel Community Services Foundation and was made possible by 194 donors who contributed to honor Mary’s memory.

Wiseman is the bookkeeper at Qinarmiut Corporation in Tuntutuliak. She is pursuing an associate’s degree at the Kuskokwim Campus in accounting. She attends classes remotely.

“It is never too late to reach out for your dreams and never give up because things got tough in life,” Wiseman said. She shared that she is “grateful and honored to be receiving this scholarship.”

The scholarship was created to honor the legacy of late KuC director Mary Ciuniq Pete. As the director of KuC and a leader in many other arenas, Mary was a fierce advocate for high-quality education, a healthy and thriving environment, and the safety of women and girls in Bethel and across Western Alaska. The was created in partnership with the leadership team from the UAF-Kuskokwim Campus and Mary’s partner, Hubert Angaiak.

“I am happy and excited (for Janice),” Angaiak said. “Congratulations to her.”

The scholarship fund has reached $27,370. The fund is endowed- meaning the principal is permanent and only interest is spent in order for the fund to grow and benefit more KuC students. When the fund reaches $40,000, the committee will be able to grant more than one award. You can help the scholarship fund grow more rapidly by making a gift to the fund.
