The Bethel Sprint Mushers Club hosted a 32 mile dog race this past Saturday and the champion is George Manutoli of Akiachak. Manutoli ran his team from the starting line on Charles Lake in Bethel and up the historical Atmautluak Trail, and then back to Bethel.
His total time was 2:19:20. For his win he was awarded $5K.
Coming in second place was up and coming musher 15 year old Spyridon Chaney of Napaskiak. His time was 2:23:40. In third place was Bethel’s Pete Kaiser. He finished in 2:26:36.
Schouviller Wassillie Sr. of Napaskiak and Dray Pasitnak of Akiachak rounded out the top 5.
Twelve seconds separated 12th and 13th place finishers Ron Kaiser of Bethel and Tory Fitzpatrick of Akiachak. Kaiser crossed the finish line with a time of 2:45:25 and Fitzpatrick finished at 2:45:37.
The finish for 7th and 8th place was also close between Mike Williams Jr. and Lewis Pavila of Kwethluk. Williams crossed the finish line at 2:37:23 and 34 seconds later Pavila finished at 2:37:57.
Eamon Fredericks, age 16, of Akiachak won the Red Lantern Award.
A total of 15 teams participated in the event. There as an 8-dog limit and cash prizes were awarded to the top 15 finishers. This race closes out the season for the Bethel Sprint Mushers Club.
“Thanks to all the mushers for a great season,” wrote the BSMC.
