The Alaska State Troopers report that they were requested to conduct a welfare check on an adult female in Aniak on September 1, 2021, at approximately 1027 hours. Based on a preliminary investigation, Troopers determined that 35-year-old Aniak resident Joseph Brown III had been sending text messages to family members of the adult female injured and threatening harm to the family members. Brown had assaulted the female by striking her in the face with his hands and the butt of a shotgun. The female was able to fight off Brown from assaulting her, Brown then attempted to shoot twice but missed both times. Brown then struck the female twice with a hammer. Troopers responded to the Aniak area via boat. When Troopers arrived in the area, they located Brown heading into the woods near his cabin; he was taken into custody without incident. Brown was transported and remanded to Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center on charges of Attempted Murder I, Assault II, Assault IIIx 6, Felony DUI, MIW 4, Unlawful Contact, Probation Violation.
