Local region wrestlers battle at State

by Greg Lincoln

3X State Champion Landon Smith of Bethel.

This past weekend we had the opportunity to see some of our local wrestlers compete at the 2021 State Wrestling finals. It was the first Division II wrestling tournament since 2019 and it was a great event after waiting out a whole year due to the pandemic. Our region wrestlers did great, showing respect and sportsmanship throughout the event. Good job everyone!

In the 112 lb. division Dayton Hoblet of the Mount Edgecumbe Braves battled his way to a 3rd place finish. Also wrestling for the Cardinal and Gold was Ethan Cooke of Bethel. He placed 2nd in the 135 lb. bracket. His teammate Trey Dock placed 4th. In the 145 lb. division was Emilio Mangrobang who finished in 3rd. Isabella Kness also competed for Mt. Edgecumbe in the girls division for the 189 lb. weight class.

Four Chevak Comets also made it to state: Kaden Tangiegak (130) who placed 6th, Ace Hill (140), Awesome Ulroan (145) and John Pingayak (152).

Two wrestlers came from Stebbins High School: Ryan Nashoanak (145) and Caden Atchak (160). Nashoanak posted a victory over Noatak’s Whittier Carter-Sours.

On the girls side, Chevak had Michelle Atcherian (119), Anya Pingayak (145) who placed 3rd in her division, and Haley Ulroan (160) who finished in 5th place.

Watching can be kind of tough when taking photos because you’re rooting for your wrestlers and losses can be hard. As long as you do your best and have fun, its worth the effort. Good job!
