Isabel Lieb of the Bethel Lady Warriors wrestling team dominated in the 138 lbs. weight class at the 2022 Girls Wrestling State Championship finals to win her first state championship.
The top seed for her bracket, Lieb, a junior, defeated Rylee Abbett of Chugiak in the opening round. Lieb beat Venice Cabugao of Barlett High in the quarterfinals. In the semis she won over Kiann Williams of Lathrop to advance to the championship round.
Her opponent was Daisy Hannevold of Soldotna in the finals. She won by major decision over Hannevold 13-3 in the third round to win the state championship. Kiann Willaims of Lathrop won the bronze medal.
Payton Boney also of the Bethel Lady Warriors (145 lbs.) battled in the championship round against Trinity Donovon of Soldotna. Boney placed second. In third place was Saige Morris of South Anchorage.
Their teammate Emilie Madson of Bethel wrestling in the 100 lbs. bracket placed third overall. Pagan Lester of Newhalen placed 6th.
Michelle Atcherian of Chevak (114 lbs.) took 5th. Tahira Akaran of the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves (120 lbs.) also took 5th place.
Newhalen’s Aileen Lester won 1st place in the 132 lbs. weight division. She defeated Natalie Tobuk of Nome for the title.
The Bethel Lady Warriors placed 4th in the team standings.
