Lieb wins gold at varsity ladies Lancer Smith Tournament

Isabel Lieb of the Bethel Lady Warriors won the gold medal at last weekend’s Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament Invitational in Palmer, AK in the 138 lbs. bracket.

She defeated Marissa Neumann-Arch of Tok in the opening round. Lynn Fayrum of Unalaska, Brooke Phelps of BBHS, and Carlie VanBuskirk of Valdez could not withstand Lieb in the bracket leading up to the final bout. She battled top seed Daisy Hannevold of Soldotna for the win, pinning her opponent at 2:46.

Lady Warrior Emilie Madson won the bronze medal in the 100 lbs. weight class. She beat Soldotna’s Keeley Moore and Kichelle Frizzelle of Wasilla in her first two bouts. She lost to eventual winner Pagan Lester of Newhalen in the semifinal round. She won two more victories in the consolation bracket.

Bethel’s Payton Boney took 6th overall in the 145 lbs. weight class. Bethel Lady Warriors Constance Albert, Jordan Klejka, Anna Avalos, Briella Herron, and Zellia Avalos also competed at the event.

The Lady Warriors placed 4th in the final standings.

Mt. Edgecumbe’s Nevaeh George (107 lbs.) placed 6th overall. Her teammate Isabella Kness (165 lbs.) also took 6th.

Lady Comet Michelle Atcherian (114 lbs.) of Chevak also took 6th place.

The Lathrop Lady Malemutes took first for the teams, the North Pole Patriots took second. In third was Soldotna.

Also wrestling at the tournament were teams from Colony, Redington, Palmer, Newhalen, Service, South Anch., Homer, and West Valley of Fairbanks.
