Laura A. Kylook

May 17, 1932 – July 25, 2022

Laura Angela Kylook, 90, of Bethel, peacefully died on July 25, 2022 with her children by her side. She was born on May 17, 1932 at Fish Village, AK to Xavier Afcan and Clara (Phillip) Afcan. She spent her childhood years in Fish Village and attended the Akulurak mission school. Thereafter, she spent her early days in Bethel babysitting for Eddie and Bessie Hoffman where she met her husband Gabriel (Blue Eyes) Kylook, Sr.

On May 18, 1953 Laura married Gabriel in Bethel where they made their home and began their family. Throughout the years, Laura held various housekeeping jobs for Nora Guinn and Dianne Carpenter and later as a dietary aide for the YKHC hospital until she retired.

Laura’s retirement years brought her much happiness in things she cherished most – spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was an avid qaspeq maker and quilter and enjoyed making coats and mittens for her grandchildren. She loved cutting fish every summer and baking her delicious bread and pies. During her quiet time, Laura enjoyed putting together puzzles and playing cards.

Known as Mom and Gramma to her children and grandchildren and Auntie Laura by her nieces and nephews, Laura held each one dearly in her heart. Her unconditional love for her family and friends, she always welcomed everyone into her home and invited them to eat at her table. Her food was accompanied with conversations filled with laughter and sincerity. Her love, compassion, and sense of humor will always be remembered.

Laura is survived by her children: Gabriel Kylook Jr., Joanne Evon, and Patrick (Maggie) Kylook of Bethel; Barbara Martinez of Anchorage; and Vernon Kylook of Seattle, WA; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
