The Scammon Bay Lady Eagles knew one day their win streak would come to an end. Streaks, after all, are made to be broken.
For the two-time defending Class A state champions, their 62-game streak came to an end on Friday when they suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Class 4A Bartlett in the second round of the 2018 Ravn Invitational Basketball Tournament. The tournament was held Jan. 24-26 at the WarriorDome in Bethel.
The Eagles did not score until 47 seconds were left in the first quarter. After that they overcame a multipoint deficit to catch up the Bartlett Bears, stunning them by almost going into overtime.
Scammon Bay fans rocked the WarriorDome.
Having gone undefeated in 2016 and 2017, the Lady Eagles opened the 2017-18 season with a bang. The team won its first eight games, including a 44-37 victory over Class 3A Kotzebue on Thursday in the first round of the tournament.
Scammon Bay began its win streak on Jan. 6, 2016. After dropping its first three games at the AKFC tournament in Anchorage, the Lady Eagles hit stride, riding the hot hand of Kiah Charlie to a 72-36 victory over Newtok. The SBHS girls won their next 23 games, including a 66-43 victory over Alak in the Class 1A state championship game. The Lady Eagles extended the streak to 54 games last year by completing a special 31-0 season. The team won its second straight state title last March with a 71-35 victory over Selawik.
The three-time defending Yukon Delta Conference champion, Scammon Bay suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday with a 62-58 loss to Galena.
