Kwethluk Dog Mushers hosts races, events

The Kwethluk Dog Mushers Association hosted their annual festival on February 14-15, 2025 featuring a main event dog race, fiddle dancing, a bingo giveaway, a raffle, and a free poker tournament.

Fifteen dog teams participated in the Kwethluk Dog Race. Winning the event was Mike Williams Jr. of Akiak, he posted the fastest time on both days. His combined times from the two days of racing was 2:18:09. In second place was Bethel’s Maurice Andrews, his overall time was 2:22. In third was Jason Pavila of Kwethluk, his time was 2:29.18 to round out the top three.

The 8-dog limit dog race had two heats. The race started at 1pm at the north sandbar at the mouth of the Kwethluk River. The trail headed upriver into the old Kuskokuak and then down to the Kuskokuak at the dead end, then returning to the starting line.

The youngest musher was Spyridon Chaney age 15 of Napaskiak and the eldest musher was Carl Ekamrak of Akiachak. They were given special awards and recognition at the awards ceremony.
